Egadi Islands

Protected sea area

This is the largest marine reserve in the Mediterranean Sea and boasts the most beautiful sea; clean and clear in the area with fantastic backdrops.

The Protected Marine Area (AMP) is formed by the Egadi Islands: Favignana, Levanzo and Marettimo and the islets of Formica and Maraone.

In this area, the landscape is characterized by many beaches, cliffs and large cliffs.

The Posidonia oceanica meadows represent the lung of the Mediterranean and are fundamental for the balance of the marine ecosystem, as they produce oxygen and absorb CO2, moreover, they represent an effective defence of the coast from the erosion due to the wave motion, they protect it costs through the formation of banquets. This type of marine habitat is home to completely different species communities.
Coralligenous seabeds are the most spectacular underwater landscapes found in this area with numerous submerged and semi-submerged caves.

The Marine Protected Area is divided into four zones with different levels of protection and with different possibilities of access and limitations in usability. Underwater fishing, the use of water bikes and the removal of marine organisms are the only activities not allowed in the Marine Protected Area.

All other activities (bathing, navigation, anchorage, mooring, diving, professional and recreational fishing, and various nautical services to tourism) are permitted and regulated, as provided for in the AMP Implementation and Organization Regulations, issued by Ministerial Decree in 2010, and the Supplementary Disciplinary prepared annually by the Managing Body.
